by, Justin Jankowski

Explore this luxurious timber frame lake house in Wisconsin, located on a peninsula off of Lake Petenwell, featuring 500 feet of private shoreline. This home features panoramic views of the lake and is just minutes away from Sand Valley, renowned for its world-class golf. With over 7,500 square feet of living space, there is plenty of room for entertaining and hosting out-of-town guests.

This luxury timber frame home has five bedrooms, three and a half baths, an open floor layout, an entertaining deck, a private deck, a cozy loft space, a mudroom drop zone area, an attached garage, and a finished lower level. Other highlights include built-in smart home technology and solar-powered features.

Our design team modified our Petenwell Lake Home floor plan, which is a log home plan, to be a timber frame house floor plan instead. This isn't just a house; this luxury timber frame home design blends beauty, comfort, and location.

Timber Frame Home Interior Features

Let’s take an in-depth look at the inside of this luxury timber frame lake house. You'll see rustic, nautical details throughout.

  • Great Room: The great room in this lakefront timber frame home plan features large glass walls on either side of the home, providing magnificent views of the lake. The prow wall almost gives a 270-degree viewing area, with picture unit windows that provide plenty of natural light and an unobstructed view of the lake. There are times when you want to block the sun, so you'll see that this home features motorized blinds. On the side walls, energy-efficient Pella casement windows can be opened, providing necessary ventilation into this open floor plan. The great room also features hand-hewn timber trim, posts, and beams, which add to the character of this custom timber frame home. A stone fireplace with a large chaise and hand-hewn timber mantle adds to the rustic aesthetic. The vaulted ceiling opens up the space, featuring timber trusses and a view of the loft area above.
  • Kitchen: Located off the great room, the stunning kitchen is designed for hosting and entertaining. The rustic alder cabinetry features our popular toffee stain, showcasing the grains in the wood. Custom panels made to match the cabinetry go over the refrigerator, blending it in and giving it a unique finish. The hardware used in the kitchen and throughout the luxury timber frame home has a nautical theme, which adds the perfect touch to this lake house. This kitchen features a WOLF cooktop, a built-in oven, and a microwave drawer. Every detail was carefully designed to maximize space and storage. Our design team put in functional drawers at the bottom of the cabinetry where there is normally a false drawer under a sink or cooktop. The real stone backsplash is easy to clean and complements the cabinets and countertops. Another great feature of this timber frame home kitchen is the U-shaped island. Prep work can be done on one end, while serving can be done on the other. With plenty of seating, guests can enjoy meals at the island. The side of the island features our proprietary hand-hewn finish on tongue and groove.
  • Entertaining Deck: An adjacent door off the kitchen leads outside to the entertaining deck with an outdoor table. This is a great space for enjoying meals outside on warm days. A smart-enabled sun shade provides a cover and retracts on windy days.
  • Dining Room: The dining room is also part of the open layout featured in this modern timber frame house. A large, 14-foot-long, four-foot-wide black walnut table is the highlight of this space and can seat up to 12 people.
  • Handcrafted Timber Staircase: This timber frame home design features a custom hand-hewn stairway leading to the loft. Even the treads are hand-hewn, giving it more traction and making it non-slip.
  • Upstairs Loft: Up in the loft area, you can see the beautiful hand-hewn detail in the timber trusses. The loft can be used as a reading nook, a sitting area, a game room, or a place to relax and watch TV. The views of the lake continue up here, along with the nautical theme, as there is a canoe mounted on the ceiling.
  • Guest Suite: While upstairs, see the guest suite. The gable windows allow for vaulted ceilings on the upper level with hand-hewn ridge beams and rafters. There is a spacious walk-in closet and a spa-like bathroom. The window in the tiled shower provides a beautiful view of the outdoors. The pebble tile floor has no curb, making it accessible as the client ages in place. Angled glass keeps water in the shower, preventing it from splashing.
  • Master Bedroom: Directly beneath the guest suite on the main level of the timber frame home plan is the master suite. This room has a softer touch with more drywall and hand-hewn timber accents. A lowered window above the bed provides easy access for opening and closing the window. There is a cozy fireplace that adds warmth to the space. The hearth is raised for extra seating, and the mantle ties into the timber rafters on the ceiling. LED lighting under the mantle highlights the stone.
  • Private Master Deck: Located off the master suite, you'll find a private deck with a sitting area, perfect for enjoying a coffee or watching the sun set. This deck has a view of the entire lake. This lakefront timber home plan uses a maintenance-free composite decking that doesn't get hot on your feet, ideal for pets. It’s also non-slip when it gets wet. An aluminum powder-coated railing is also maintenance-free, as well as the exterior windows, shakes, and siding, which is a concrete timber facade that is made to look like wood.
  • Master Bathroom: The master bath also features an amazing view from the shower window. The zero-entry walk-in shower has grab bars, which are perfect for aging in place. Our design team added the extra detail of mounting the handles for the water in the shower on the opposite wall of the shower head. This allows you to turn on the water and let it warm up before jumping in. Other features that make this a forever home include a high-rise toilet, three-foot-wide doors, and lever handles for easy accessibility. Trough-style faucets and the nautical theme hardware continue in here. The worn edge of the countertop complements the timbers. A walk-in closet features custom cabinetry, ideal for organizing all your clothing.
  • Mudroom & Laundry Room: The mudroom drop zone is located right off the garage and near the kitchen. This space doubles as the laundry room, with a high-end washer and dryer. The mudroom has an extra refrigerator, which is great for hosting. There are two large closets, ideal for storing jackets, coats, gloves, hats, and shoes.
  • Attached Garage: This timber frame lake home has a three-stall garage with no steps into the home, as the foundation was raised to make it level with the main floor. The finished garage has drywall, an epoxy floor with in-floor heat, and hand-hewn trim. It’s a great space for storing lake toys, a boat, and UTVs.

Finished Lower Level

The finished lower level of this timber frame design extends the living area. A second handcrafted timber stairway leads to the basement, which has a family room, a full bath, two more bedrooms, a flex room, and a mechanical room.

  • Family Room: Downstairs, the large family room provides a clean slate. There is a rough-in for a future kitchenette and a gorgeous wood-burning fireplace with a cubby for wood. LED lighting accents the impressive stone and the hand-hewn timber mantle.
  • Full Bathroom: There is another full bathroom downstairs, ideal for when guests come to stay.
  • Third & Fourth Bedrooms: Two more bedrooms are located on the lower level, perfect for hosting guests or when family comes to visit.
  • Flex Room: The basement of this modern timber frame house features a flex room, which could be used as a fifth bedroom or a storage room to store lake equipment, beach chairs, fishing poles, and decorations.
  • Mechanical Room: This timber frame lake house is completely smart-enabled. Inside the mechanical room, there is a cabinet that houses all the equipment. With this smart technology, the client can control lights, temperature, shades, security, and even fireplaces, all with the touch of their phone. On the outside of the garage, there are solar panels, which provide electricity for the entire home.

Exterior Features of This Timber Frame Lake Home Design

This lakefront timber frame home plan is crafted with stone and maintenance-free concrete that looks like timber. Outdoor living spaces allow you to appreciate the stunning landscape. These details ensure that the home perfectly blends into the setting by the lake.

  • Front Door: The front door is eight feet tall and 42 inches wide, making a big first impression as the timber frame lake house comes into view. It’s warm and inviting, crafted from real alderwood.
  • Covered Porch: An impressive front porch provides cover from the elements, like rain and snow, and adds character to the exterior of the timber frame lake home.
  • Garage Doors: This modern timber frame house has an attached garage with a large 18-foot-wide garage door that is eight feet tall. Another garage door is 10-feet-wide and also eight feet tall, perfect for storing a boat, a UTV, or snowmobiles. The wood garage doors are insulated, keeping this space warm during colder months.
  • Copper Details: This timber frame home features copper gutters that will eventually develop into the nice patina color that you see on the chimney cap.
